QEII Definitives - Training School Stamps |
|
From
The Rhodesian Philatelist No 30 - January 2011
Training
School Stamps
After the definitives were withdrawn
an unknown quantity of sheets of stamps were overprinted
with horizontal tramline bars for use as ‘Training
School stamps’.
The purpose of the overprint is to deface the stamps
making them unsuitable for postage. On the low &
middle values a pair of lines is 12½mm apart
and fits a row of stamps perfectly, between each row
the lines are 10mm apart. The same overprint was used
on the high values and being a different format it does
not fit.
It is not known whether these Training school stamps
were used throughout the Federation. In the very early
days the only values I had seen were the 10/- &
£1.
|
|
During
the 1990’s I acquired a folder, ex Fort Johnston,
containing a remainder stock of Training School stamps
with eleven different values of the 1954 -
56 definitives. On the front of the folder is a manuscript
notation ‘Contents – Supplied to Students’.
This was my first sight of values other than the 10/-
& £1
Of the ½d, 1d, 2d, 2½d & 3d I had part
sheets of 120.
Then there was a 4d x 13, 4½d x 70, 9d x 25, 1/3
x 27,
10/- x 20 and £1 x 30. The imbalance of numbers
effectively makes the 4d value rare. The
tramline lines fit the low values perfectly & on the
high values there are 3 lines 12½ & 10 mm apart
These Training school stamps
show a novel way for the
Post Office to put obsolete stamp issues to work.
